Amaxophobia
(H)amaxophobia - the fear of driving or riding in cars.
Amaxophobia is also spelled as Hamaxophobia in instances, but to make things easier, I will be referring to this fear as Amaxophobia.
Well, do I have a tale to tell you! This fear gave me so much to research and gave me so little in return! For the clear and simple reason that I do not want to spend several hours hurting my fingers to retell the tale in the long version, you must settle for the short version:
I spent a ton of time over my thanksgiving break attempting to figure out how amaxophobia develops, and I got next to nothing.
Amaxophobia is what sciencey people would refer to as an “isolated” phobia; that is a phobia not related to any social key factors. As far as many scientists whos’ works I researched can tell, amaxophobia can stem from genetics, trauma, or a number of less likely causes. From what I read, Amaxophobia is similar to PTSD, but the anxiety and stress and all that stem from this fear. By being in a car, someone who suffers from axaxophobia might feel any of numerous symptoms, these symptoms are created by the brain to dissuage the sufferer from being in that situation. Overall the most irritating thing to me about amaxophobia, is that there are no fancy ways to explain it; it stems from a traumatic experience in a car, probably as a child, or from genetics, but also a combo of both. One thing that I am glad about it that my research into Amaxophobia also sheds light on Ablutophobia. This is because both Ablutophobia and Amaxophobia are isolated phobias, that most commonly stem from a traumatic childhood experience, such as nearly drowning in the bath or being part of a car crash as a child.

Interesting! I think a lot of phobias are realted to past traumas, are they not?
ReplyDeleteI think it would be useful if you added what the symptoms are, rather than just saying "symptoms."
As for the card: 4 mana is steep. It's a sideboard card in standard at best, and no one plays vehicles anymore. I'd drop it to 1 or two mana instead.
Templating:
Enchanted creature can't attack as long as it's controller controls a vehicle.
Enchanted creature can't crew vehicles.
Love the art :P
Noah, that is a good point. While most phobias can be caused by traumatic past events, it is too large of a net. I prefer to think of that cause as a default, only to be used if necessary.
ReplyDeleteI will lower the manacost when I get around to it, but I will keep the effect the same. This is because you fear getting in or driving the car, which is much more similar to attacking with the vehicle, rather than controlling it. Thanks for the feedback still.
