Alliumphobia

Alliumphobia - fear of garlic ————————————————————————— WORD HISTORY: The prefix Allium-, is a Latin word, meaning “ bulb of garlic. ” Come to think of it, word history isn’t accurate... maybe I will call it “Word Facts” in the future; tell me what you think! ————————————————————————— A person with Alliumphobia will experience the symptoms when they are in the proximity of garlic (when aware of the garlic’s precense), when they smell garlic, or another plant with a similar pungent smell, or in extreme cases, at the mere sight of garlic. ————————————————————————— SYMPTOMS: • Dread • Shortness of Breath • Rapid Breathing • Heart Palpitations • Excessive Sweating • Nausea • Dry Mouth • Confusion • Inability to Articulate Clearly • Lack of Focus • Irritability • Shaking • Feelings of Powerlessness • Obsession • Avoidance Behaviors • Headaches ———————————————————————————————————————— THE SCIENCE: At first, I wasn’t particularly extatic about the whole science p...

I’m Back Baby

I would like to officially announce the end of my hiatus. It actually will be on Wednesday, from which I will work on Thursday’s blogpost. Also, to celebrate the holiday season, give gifts. Give me your best idea for a phobia card! Lastly check out my friends’ blogs: My Friend’s Blog: http://swinehart20time5thjake.blogspot.com/ My Girlfriend’s Blog: http://swinehearts20time5thcayla.blogspot.com/

Hiatus

Hi everyone! I would like to announce a brief Hiatus from my blog. The point of my blog is to better myself, my viewers and... well thats all who will be benefited by such. -_-. I am benefited because I can learn about this fascinating and frightening world or fear. I also get to better my abilities at cardsmith. My viewers benefit by being able to contribute to the cards with feedback as well as to learn about fear. My Hiatus is focused mainly on the first benefit I listed for myself. I want to take a brief hiatus to brainstorm and remake cards. I need my hiatus in order to catch up on homework and to study. I will of course still be researching for my blog, but much less of my time will be spent this way. I hope you all can understand. My account will likely be much more active in the near future as I create, remake, delete, and improve upon my cards. Ranshi922

Ailurophobia

Image
Ailurophobia - fear of cats --------------------------------------------------------------------------- WORD HISTORY: Ailurophobia is derived from Phobos and Ailuros. Phobos, meaning fear, and Ailuros meaning cat. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS: To be honest, the symptoms are more or less the same as any other phobia. I will probably only have a symptom section every few. Comment if you would prefer for me to list symptoms every time, or just every now and then. Got it? --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCIENCE: I am personally a dog person, but there are those who really love cats, there are those who don't particularly like cats, but someone with Ailurophobia is downright terrified of cats. Ailurophobia is a defensive tactic used by the subconscious to protect oneself. Many times, people with this fear, don't know why they fear cats, merely that they do and always have....

Aichmophobia

Image
Aichmophobia - fear of needles and other sharp objects ————————————————————————— WORD HISTORY: Aichmophobia is derived from Phobos (obviously), and the Greek word Aichmē which means point. ————————————————————————— A person suffering from Aichmophobia will avoid needles or medical procedures that involve needles by any means necessary. With their avoidance of needles, at least they will never do heroin. ————————————————————————— SYMPTOMS: Symptoms of Aichmophobia occur almost instantly when in exposure to needles or other needle like pointy objects: ● Feelings of dread or panic ● Rapid and uncontrollable response to their fear, such as fainting. ● Rapid Heartbeat ● Shortness of Breath ● Trembling ● Extreme Avoidance ———————————————————————————————————————— SCIENCE: Yay Oddballs! Aichmophobia has no universally specific or accepted cause! XD There is the belief that the fear of sharp things had been somewhat wired into the human brain over the evolutionary journey ...

Agyrophobia

Image
Agyrophobia - the fear of crossing the street. ————————————————————————— WORD HISTORY: Agyrophobia, othwise known as Dromophobia, is the fear of crossing streets. Agyrophobia is derived from Phobos, the Greek god of fear and the Greek word for street, Agyro . Dromophobia is also derived from Phobos (all phobias are derived from him, so lets just take him for granted now), and from the the Greek word Dromo , or racecourse. ————————————————————————— A person with Agyrophobia has the incessant fear that if they cross a street, there will be harm done to them, whether by a car or by some other means. ————————————————————————— SYMPTOMS: The most common symptoms of Agyrophobia are: • Feelings of dread when presented with a situation or the thought of crossing road or intersection. •Automatic or uncontrollable muscle movements in responce to their fear. Most likely something of a fight or flight responce. • Rapid Heartbeat • Shortness of Breath • Trembling and Shaking • Extre...

Agrizoophobia

Image
Agrizoophobia - the fear of wild animals The SCIENCE: Alright... This will be fun for me. Any of you who have been following my blog for a while will know that I love to dive into the ancient past of human evolution to explain away fears. Because of that, this is like Christmas come early 😆😨. For the explanation of Agrizoophobia, we will need to dive into the time before civilization; a time that was from the days of the Homo Erectus. Ancient humans needed to be careful; everything was in search of food and they were as good as any. This meant that we needed to be cautious of our surroundings, including the animals. The evolving human brain adapted and in it became the hardwired idea that wild animals are to be feared and avoided. As humans developed into the Homo Sapien, we kept out of danger by staying away from animals that were potentially dangerous. As societies developed, the main sources of food were grown crops and fish, because by farming and fishing, rather than hun...

OK guys, I am getting depressed slightly😨. This is because a) My viewers per post is going down, it was before at about 10 per on the day it comes out, but now its only 6... b) No one is commenting! I dont know if people are actually liking what I am doing if nobody comments! b.1) Noah U said you’d check out each post and comment! U aren’t! Lastly, there are still no followers of my blog. Agliophobia

Image
Agliophobia - the fear of pain Me (to me in my head): Do I really  need to explain this one? Me (I’ll call that first “Me” Me1 and this one Me2): Yes. Me1: Why? Me2: Because you already did several posts rather lazily and we don’t want to appear too lazy! Me1: Alright. Fine. That is generally what went on ion my head before I decided to actually write this post. However, I feel immensely tired at the moment and don't really feel like explaining why people fear pain. I’ll let you try to figure this tricky one out. No; instead I will explain the origins of the word, and a few exceptions, as well as when this is out of the ordinary. The word agliophobia is a mix between the prefix aglio and the word phobia. Phobia is derived from the Greek god of fear, Phobos. Aglio is derived from the Greek word Aglo, which means pain. Similar to how amaxophobia has different phobia words that mean the same thing, agliophobia has the following synonyms: Odynophobia, Odynephobia, and Od...

Aviophobia

Image
Aviophobia - the fear of flight Aviophobia develops in a similar way that amaxophobia develops; traumatic events whilst someone is a child. However there is another way... People who develope the fear of flight commonly develop Acrophobia at about the same time. The Aviophobia is merely an extension of their Acrophobia, where they are telling themselves that being in a plane is no safer than being on a tall building. I know that I was a bit loose with this post, but Aviophobia is largely a mix between Amaxophobia and Acrophobia in a matter of development.  My Cardsmith: https://mtgcardsmith.com/user/Ranshi922 Aviophobia Card: https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/aviophobia?list=user My Cardsmith Forum:  http://forums.mtgcardsmith.com/discussion/3188/phobia-mtg-20-time

Amaxophobia

Image
(H)amaxophobia - the fear of driving or riding in cars. Amaxophobia is also spelled as Hamaxophobia in instances, but to make things easier, I will be referring to this fear as Amaxophobia. Well, do I have a tale to tell you! This fear gave me so much to research and gave me so little in return! For the clear and simple reason that I do not want to spend several hours hurting my fingers to retell the tale in the long version, you must settle for the short version: I spent a ton of time over my thanksgiving break attempting to figure out how amaxophobia develops, and I got next to nothing. Amaxophobia is what sciencey people would refer to as an “isolated” phobia; that is a phobia not related to any social key factors. As far as many scientists whos’ works I researched can tell, amaxophobia can stem from genetics, trauma, or a number of less likely causes. From what I read, Amaxophobia is similar to PTSD, but the anxiety and stress and all that stem from this fear. By being in a...

Acrophobia

Image
Acrophobia - the fear of heights. This fear is rather simple; cut and dry. The probable origin of the fear of heights is the worry that you will fall. Regardless of the safety in the situation, the brain will begin to freak out and say “You should NOT be here!” The amygtala will fire up you fight or flight response and most people will choose flight. This is why the line “Whatever you do, don’t look down.” Is so iconic. By looking down from high up, it startles the fear centers of the brain, bypassing rational thought, meaning that you cant say to yourself, “This is a glass floor” or something of the sort. I know I rambled on a lot there, but I am just trying to say the same thing in many ways, I guess. Check out the rest of my blog, and as I said the other day, when I hit 10 followers I will post a fear of the dark special! So Leave a like, a comment, and follow the blog! Achluophobia

Image
This blogpost is much more of an announcement. This is because the fear of the dark has three different tiers and for those you haven’t noticed yet, I am posting alphabetically the phobias. (With an exception of Triskaidekaphobia and Parskevidekatriaphobia because of the Friday the 13th this year, but I didn’t get to it in time, and Xenophobia as the example.) Nevertheless, due to the nature of the three steps of this phobia, I will make a larger blog post of all three of them once I have created the cards for the other to degrees. To be honest I am not too sure why I am posting this announcement in the first place, because who cares anyway about my blog. Whatever. Another way I will get around to this is in responce to 10 followers of my blog! If that causes me to make that post earlier, then I will put my heart and soul into it! Thanks for checking out this mostly pointless post! If you want to get more in depth blog posts with all the effort I can muster, follow the blog. As...

Agoraphobia

Image
Agoraphobia - the fear of the outside or open spaces Agoraphobia is derived from Agora, the Greek word for marketplace, and phobia. Agoraphobia is somewhat common, but not as common as its well known counterpart, Claustrophobia. It is likely that like most common phobias, agoraphobia, originated in the primordial human brain. In a world of untamed, potentially dangerous, nature everywhere, the early humans needed to be dubious about going into open places, because who knew what could sneak up behind them? Aside from that tidbit, Agoraphobia is random in people, there is no predicting when someone well develop it or if someone will. Agoraphobia, as is the nature of phobias, is uncontrollable in that it is not the willing fear of a human. I know that I am using strange if not fully incorrect sentence structures, so I will cut this off here. Parskevidekatriaphobia

Image
Parskevidekatriaphobia - The Fear of Friday the 13th (Not the movie) While Parskevidekatriaphobia has more or less the same reasons of existence as Triskaidekaphobia, there is an added detail to one of the listed reason for triskaidekaphobia: Not only was the mass arrests and executions of the Knights of Templar started on a thirteenth, it was on a Friday the 13th! Specifically, Friday, October 13, 1307. 10/13/1307 or 13/10/1307 for the Brits in the audience. Bc Parskevidekatriaphobia is very very similar to triskaidekaphobia, this post was a bit more lax than I prefer, but then again the origin was just about if not the exact same, so... Whatever. Check out the rest of my blog! Check out my Cardsmith, Ranshi922! And leave a like and follow! Lastly, feel free to comment! Thanks! Working My "A" Off

I'll make this short and simple. I will over the next numerous blog posts be working my "a" off to try to get my research posts caught up with the cards I have made so far. My aim is for a post every other to every third day. Just wanted to but that out there.

Triskaidekaphobia

Image
https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/triskaidekaphobia?list=user Triskaidekaphobia - the fear of the number 13, or things relating to the number 13. Triskaidekaphobia is overall a pretty common fear. 13 has been considered an unlucky number for a very long time, all the way back to the times of the Greeks. The Greeks considered the number 12, to be a perfect number, and then 13 was considered to be the most imperfect number. Fast foward to the last supper, where in the 13th seat was Judas, who then betrays Jesus. In the traditional designs of the gallows, there were thirteen steps; 12 ascending, representing the perfection of 12, and one step descending, to represent the misfortune of 13. In addition, the mass arrest and execution of the Knights of Templar began on a 13th. This superstition is common practice: -Hospitals avoid having room thirteens -Buildings that would have a thirteenth floor skip the thirteenth floor to the fourteenth. -Friday the Thirteenth is still considered a unlu...

Ablutophobia

Image
Ablutophobia - the persistent, abnormal, and usually unwanted fear of bathing, washing, or cleaning one’s self. I really dont know what to say about this fear. And not to offend anyone who might have this fear (this upcoming sentence is from the heart (i’m sorry)) but I think that Ablutophobia is stupid. I understand that many small children dont like bathing, but when an adult is not just in a state of dislike, but fear, things must’ve gotten too far. Ive tried to find a point in the human evolution where this fear might’ve stemmed from, but I couldn’t find it. So, with lack of knowledge gained from this quest of research into ablutophobia, I have to say this: To anyone who is so misfortunate to have developed this fear, I feel really sorry for you, you tortured, and probably smelly soul. Also try therapy or something. I am probably more disappointed than any view right now, because I let myself down on this one. Remember: please comment. Let me know what you think, and help point...

Xenophobia

Image
Xenophobia is rather common, which to be honest is kinda sad. Xenophobia is one of the most common fears in the world. I do understand why Xenophobia is prevalent; the fear of strange or foreign concepts is hardwired into the brain and has been there before we fully evolved to be Homo Sapiens. It was a necessary fear and was crucial to our survival; if we weren’t dubious and afraid of things we didn’t know, we would’ve carelessly wandered into countless brutal deaths. This fear is no longer needed to survive each and every day, but it still exists. This hardwired fear is still more or less ubiquitous, because it hasn’t been that long since the point when this was survival necessary, at least on the scale of evolution. The human brain hasn’t had enough time to realize that this is no long relevant and that you don’t need this. A weaker form of xenophobia is hardwired into every human brain and has been since prehistoric times, but those with a fully fledged xenophobia are so overtaken ...

A Change in Pace

I have realized that posting these cards about phobias, is all well and good but I need to really discuss them. So I have decided to post a single card per blog post, also that I will use that blog post to provide the information that the card itself does not. Naturally, I cannot go back in time to do this with my previous cards, rather, I will do this with my cards that I have made already, before moving on to other fears. I hope you will learn as much as I have whilst I was researching! -Wesley aka Ranshi922

I’m Bout to Pitch Part III

Image
Part III! Wow! I hope this is the last one. Needless to say, I think I learned my lesson on making too much between posts. This will happen... Agliophobia - The Fear of Pain Agrizoophobia - Fear of Wild Animals Agyrophobia - Fear of Crossing the Street Aichmophobia - Fear of needles and other sharp objects Ailurophobia - Fear of Cats Damn. Its doing it again and there is only one left! I will suffer through this nightmare of laggy glitches! Alliumphobia - Fear of Garlic

I’m ‘Bout to Pitch Part II

Image
The post was getting too long; the page was glitching and I couldnt see what I was doing at the bottom and it wouldn’t let me scroll any further. So, I split this post into two parts. Let’s get back to it, shall we? Achluophobia - The fear of the dark Acrophobia - Fear of Heights Amaxophobia - Fear of riding in or driving cars Aviophobia - Fear of Flight, Particularly in Flying Vehicles Alright, it is doing that thing again, so to part III I suppose... God...

I’m ‘Bout to Pitch

Image
First of all, I would like to apologize for the delay in my cards of fear of 13, and fear of Friday the thirteenth. I had been busy and I lost track of the time. So just pretend that they are being posted two weeks ago. Id Est Quod Id Est. But now, I will be pitching my 20% Time today!!! So to promote this idea as much as possible, I am going to publish all of the cards that I have been working on lately: Ablutophobia - Fear of Bathing Triskaidekaphobia - Fear of the number 13 or things relating to the number 13 Parskevidekatriaphobia - Fear of Friday the 13th (Not the movie but the concept/the date itself) (And yes I know I used an image from the movie Friday the Thirteenth) Agoraphobia - Fear of wide or open spaces (Agoraphobia, like Triskaidekaphobia, is a card that Wizards of the Coast had already made. I just rehashed it with a new flavor text that is informational. But frankly in the sense of Agoraphobia, I liked the original flavor text better.)

What This Blog Will Be About

Image
Hello. My name is Wesley, or if you are from Cardsmith, you know me as Ranshi922. I have been assigned a school project called the 20% Time project. Long story short, for my product I will be using Cardsmith to make Magic: The Gathering cards about different phobias so that people can learn about fear in a different way. On my blog, I will be posting updates on my research and with images of the cards I produced. I most likely will also open my blog up on the Cardsmith Forums so that I can open up this fun learning opportunity to other Cardsmithers. I hope you all will enjoy this as much as I will. -Wesley a.k.a.
